Juvenile Cane Toads

Juvenile cane toads or newly metamorphosed cane toads can be very difficult to distinguish from some our smaller native frog species. If you are unsure of whether you have a native frog or juvenile cane toad it is better to leave it alone. Baby cane toads are very small (eight to ten millimetres) when they first metamorphose, and black above. They can turn brown soon after and already have a few scattered reddish or brown warts. They do not have large shoulder glands at this stage, nor the ridge on the eyelids, and often are quite moist because they are usually in or near the edge of the water .

Juvenile cane toads often have very colourful red, yellow and darker brown patches over their back. Small shoulder glands and the eyelid ridges are starting to develop. The dry leathery skin is also now present.
